Who is reading your numbers on your side of the table?
This page describes the assessment in detail: what I examine, how I work, what you get and what it costs. I review your own tracking data β analytics, Search Console, advertising platforms, sitemap and source code β and put on paper what is there, citing sources and distinguishing between facts and interpretation.
Independent review
- Lead time
- Report within ten working days
- Scope
- 30 to 40 pages, with sources
- Capacity
- Three cases per month at most
The problem is rarely a bad agency
Marketing agencies typically deliver value for money. The problem lies elsewhere: they report on their own efforts, in their own jargon, to someone who cannot verify if those efforts are profitable. As long as no one on your side of the table is reading the numbers, every report is, by definition, the final word.
That is not bad faith. It is a structural gap. An assessment bridges that gap β not to undermine your supplier, but to base the conversation with them on facts rather than trust alone.
I never enter a file with a preconceived conclusion. If it turns out good work is being delivered, that is exactly how it will be documented β backed by the numbers. Every report opens with what your supplier is demonstrably doing well, before a single critical finding is presented.
In practice, such a relationship slowly drifts that way. In the first months results are discussed, then the conversation shifts to activities, and after a year the meeting is about next month's planning. Nobody decided that; it simply happened. An assessment puts the conversation back on return, once.
Who this is for
- You invest monthly in marketing, SEO, or content and have doubts about what it is delivering.
- You do not have an in-house marketing manager and are looking for someone who can challenge your supplier on equal footing.
- You are facing a renewal, a proposal, or a change of suppliers and want to make that decision based on data.
- You and your agency disagree, and you are looking for an independent third-party opinion.
What I examine
Your tracking setup.
Are conversions actually being registered correctly? If the tracking is off, any discussion about results is meaningless. This is a problem more often than people think.
What your traffic actually does.
Not just how many visitors arrive, but where they land, where they drop off, and which pages actually lead to contact β per page, per channel, and over multiple years.
What has been delivered.
Publication dates, edit history, and sitemap data reveal when your site was actually worked on, and when a technical update simply gave dozens of pages a new timestamp simultaneously.
Search performance.
Search Console data on positions, impressions, and clicks, contrasted with the keywords where the actual volume in your market lies.
What your ads deliver.
Spend, clicks and conversions per campaign in Google Ads and Meta, set against what actually comes out of it. Without the real spend, nobody can calculate return β only volume.
Technical health and source code.
What is under the hood, and whether the delivered quality matches what is being invoiced.
Comparison with your strongest competitor.
Structure, accessibility, trust signals, and visibility, compared side-by-side.
Visibility in AI answers.
Whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, and Gemini can cite your company correctly β a channel that becomes visible in your own tracking data once someone looks for it, yet rarely appears in reports.
What you get
- A comprehensive report, typically thirty to forty pages depending on the size of your file, with sources cited for every finding.
- An action plan prioritized by impact, with the initial steps actionable without needing anyone else's cooperation.
- A list of concrete questions you can put to your current supplier β without accusation, but leaving no room for evasion.
- A 90-minute meeting to review the report and determine the next steps.
- Optional: my presence at the meeting with your supplier, acting as your technical counterpart.
How I work
- I work directly from your own systems.
- Google Analytics, Search Console, your sitemap, your source code, your invoices. No third-party tool estimates unless absolutely necessary.
- I separate fact from interpretation.
- What is certain is documented as a finding. What is a suspicion is raised as a question.
- I self-correct.
- If new data refutes my earlier findings, that correction will be included in the report, explicitly and by name.
- I start with what is good.
- Every report opens with what your vendor demonstrably does well. Not out of politeness β because an assessment that only finds faults is not an assessment.
- I don't name names.
- What I determine for you remains strictly between us. No agency is mentioned by name on this site.
From practice
Three cases, anonymised.
What an independent reading of your own numbers delivers. Amounts and sectors are altered, the findings are not.
- Situation
- An β¬85,000 rebuild quote was awaiting signature.
- Finding
- Two thirds of the requested functionality already existed in the current CMS, unused.
- Result
- Scope reduced to a targeted rebuild of the commercial pages.
- Situation
- Conversion rate had fallen for three quarters, with no explanation from the vendor.
- Finding
- A form validation rejected every phone number with a country code.
- Result
- Fixed within a week; enquiries returned to their pre-decline level.
My interests, transparently upfront
I build websites myself. If an assessment reveals that your website needs to be replaced, I am one of the parties who could profit from that. That is why these agreements are firmly established:
- The assessment is a paid assignment with a fixed price. Whatever the outcome, I am paid for it and nothing extra.
- A new website is never the conclusion of an assessment. The action plan always starts with what your current setup and current vendor can improve.
- If replacement does turn out to be the best path, it is listed as an option in the report, with the explicit recommendation to request at least one quote from another party.
- I will not take over the execution within twelve months of an assessment, unless you have first presented the findings to your current vendor and they do not act on them.
- I do not work on commission from tools, hosting, or media budgets.
- My interests: IT Solutions (this site), and a minority stake in the web agency Novation. Novation is never involved in an assessment.
Who does this

Mark Lens
Every assessment is personally prepared by me from A to Z. Not because it cannot be outsourced, but because I enjoy doing it myself. A single case file brings everything together: data analysis, search performance, technology, performance, improvement roadmaps, and how AI is changing them today. After thirty-five years, that is still the work I gladly stay up late for.
From 2011 to 2016, through Awali, I provided SEO, Google Ads and Analytics advice and training to companies and governments, certified for the Google tools. So I know how such reporting is created, which numbers look good by default, and where there is room for improvement.
Before and after that, I built companies. My first company β ITsolutions β implemented ERP systems in Navision, better known today as Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central; it is no coincidence this site carries that name. PromoButler grew into Belgium's largest retail platform with over 3 million visitors per month, without any media budget, with practically every Belgian retailer as a client. I founded the purchasing groups Qcom and Qresellers (over 150 million euros in combined revenue) and owned EuroSys (B2B) and the retail chain Auva (B2C), together accounting for over 40 million euros in revenue and 250 IT professionals, until their acquisition in 2023.
Master of Business Engineering in Management Information Systems (UHasselt, cum laude). Google Analytics Certified.

Frequently asked questions
Won't this turn my agency against me?
No. The report is sent to you, not to them. What you do with it is up to you. Most clients simply present the findings during the next meeting β and a vendor that does good work gets a client in return who finally understands what they are paying for.
What if it turns out my agency is doing a good job?
Then that will be in the report, backed by the data. That is not a failed assignment. You will know that your budget is well spent, and that is exactly what you paid for.
How long does it take?
Expect two to three weeks from the moment I have access to your analytics data.
What do you need from me?
Read access to Google Analytics and Search Console, to Google Ads, Meta Ads and any other advertising platforms you use, and to your Google Business Profile. In addition, the reports and quotes from your current supplier, and the invoices for the media budget over the past twelve months. Read access is enough β I never ask for admin rights.
Is this the same as your SEO, GEO & AI analysis of β¬995?
No. That analysis examines how well your site can be found by search engines and AI assistants. A review covers the full commercial return on your digital efforts, including the work of third parties.
Are you an agency or supplier yourself? I also work on behalf of agencies that want to have their own work independently measured.
For agencies βHave someone else read your numbers just once.
Send a brief description of your situation. Within 24 hours you will know whether an assessment is useful in your case β and if it isn't, I will tell you that too.
What happens after your request?
- 01A personal reply from Mark Lens within one business day, not an automated confirmation.
